What Decisions Go Into Planning a Wedding Ceremony? A Celebrant’s Perspective

When you start planning your wedding, it can feel like there are a hundred tiny choices to make. The ceremony is no different. There are a few key decisions you can starting thinking about early on to make the process easy.

These are the main choices I like to remind my couples to start thinking about early on and that often get forgotten.

1. Choosing Your Witnesses

You’ll need two witnesses who are over 18 to sign your marriage certificates. They don’t have to be from your bridal party. Many couples use this as a lovely way to involve people who have played an important role in their lives.

2. Deciding Who Will Hold the Rings

The person who brings the rings doesn’t need to be a groomsman. It could be a sibling, a parent, a close friend, or even a niece or nephew. It’s a simple moment that can make someone feel included in a meaningful way. You can choose one or two people for this role.

3. Your Ceremony Music

Music sets the tone, so it’s worth giving it some thought. You’ll usually need:

  • 1 song for the processional (the aisle moment)

  • 3 songs for the signing

  • 1 song for the recessional, often something upbeat to kick off the celebration

If you’re looking for ideas, here are some of my favourite choices from past ceremonies - CEREMONY MUSIC.

4. Your Wet Weather Plan

Even if you’re planning for sunshine, it’s important to have a solid Plan B. Think about where your ceremony could move to if the weather turns, and check with your venue about backup options.
