What documents do you need to show your celebrant?
ID requirements for marriage can be a bit confusing, so here’s the simplest way to meet them.
To our meeting please bring:
Birth Certificates or Passports (originals)
Driver’s Licences or Proof of Age Cards
A recent rates, energy, or rego bill in one of your names showing your current address
If you’ve been married before, proof that the marriage has ended (Divorce Order or Death Certificate)
So if you each have these documents, just bring those, no need to read on!
If you don’t have all of these, read on for alternative ways to meet the requirements or get in touch and I can help.
A break down of the ID requirements:
What You’ll Need for the NOIM and Your Marriage
Each person must provide originals of:
• Proof of date and place of birth
Birth certificate or passport
• Proof of identity
Passport, driver’s licence, or proof of age card
• If previously married
A divorce order or the death certificate of your former spouse
These documents allow us to complete your Notice of Intended Marriage and confirm that you meet the legal requirements to marry.
Extra ID Needed for Your Official Marriage Certificate
If you’d like me to apply for your official Marriage Certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages (which you’ll need for things like name changes), one of you will need to provide some additional ID.
There can be some crossover with the documents above, but you’ll need one item from each category:
1. Personal ID
• Driver’s licence (photo)
• Australian or overseas passport
• Proof of age card
2. Community ID
• Medicare card
• Concession or health care card
• Student ID or recent school report
• Payslip
• Private health fund card
• Defence or police ID
• Citizenship, immigration, or birth certificate
• Government employee ID
• Blue card
3. Proof of Home Address
(This must show your name and the address you want the certificate sent to.)
• Utility bill (electricity, gas, phone)
• Lease or rental agreement
• Rates notice
• Vehicle rego or licence renewal
• Letter from a government agency
• Electoral enrolment form
• Insurance notice
