Fun ways to personalise your wedding ceremony
I love helping couples find little ways to bring a bit of laughter and personality into their marriage ceremony. It helps keep guests engaged and eases ceremony nerves with a bit of laughter.
Here are a few fun ideas you can include in your ceremony.
Hand the mic to someone you love
If you’d like your ceremony to feel even more personal, you can have a friend or family member tell your love story. It’s such a beautiful way to involve someone special — and guests always adore hearing your story told through familiar voices.
Same goes for any poems or readings you include - I’m happy to do the speaking, but having a friend or loved one up to speak is always so special.
Decide who reads vows first
Who goes first with the vows? You could flip for it, play a quick “paper, scissors, rock” game, or let the guests vote. It lightens the moment and helps shake off those nerves before you dive into your promises.
Surprise ring bearers or witnesses
A few of my couples have surprised their guests by hiding the rings under two seats before the ceremony. When it’s time, those lucky guests get to bring forward the rings and be included in your ceremony.
You can do the same with your witnesses. We can draw names from a hat, place pens under chairs, or run a mini raffle right there during the ceremony.
Or you can chose your witnesses in advance but don’t tell them until the big moment - I can call up Grandma and Grandpa to sign the paperwork and they will feel so appreciated!
Have a loved one present you as Mr & Mrs
Instead of me presenting you for the first time as a married couple, you can invite a loved one up to do it. It’s always a hit — guests love it, and the person you choose feels so honoured to be part of that moment.
Just imagine your Dad or Grandpa (who’s name you will now share) standing up there and sending you off with love - “introducing for the very first time - Mr & Mrs Smith!!”.
Make it yours
At the end of the day, there’s no “right” way to do a wedding ceremony — only what feels right for you. Whether you’re planning a beach wedding in Mackay, a garden celebration or something small and sweet, these little ideas help make your marriage ceremony one-of-a-kind.
